Finished The Inner Compass by Lawrence Yeo.
Probably the first “self-help” book that I actually finished reading. The book was recommended by Morgan Housel in his books, so I decided to give it a try. Overall, I can’t say it was a good experience.
The author seems to have very clear points to share, and he managed to get those points through. However, the rest of the book, filled with examples and quotes, is very hard to follow. Sometimes I wasn’t sure how a specific example was connected to the point mentioned earlier.
Nevertheless, the three core principles for self-understanding proposed by the author made sense to me: Reflection, Relation, and Creativity.
- Reflection: pick up a pen and a notebook and write down what has been troubling you and why.
- Relation: treat others as who they are and feel the moments you share with them, instead of mark their value based on what they have to offer.
- Creativity: express yourself by creating something that can improve your skills over time (something that can be mastered).
